Making More Motivation

Some of my fitness fire feels like it's been put out.  Has that ever happened to you?

I found myself missing more workouts lately and that's something that I never do.  I schedule my workouts at the beginning of my week and they really are highlights of my day.  However since starting my clinical internship at the hospital I don't have so much control over my day.  Today, for example, I'm particularly bummed about.  I'm still on a post PR high from the killer half marathon at the beginning of the month.  Kelsey got me excited to run a full marathon again after her success at Disney.  I've been looking at races and I even bought a new training book.
Kelsey was telling me (she bought the book first) about the importance of slow runs in your training.  They help with your slow twitch muscle fibers which are needed during longer races.  I've been stuck in such a "run fast, be fast" mentality that I let me "slow" runs get increasingly faster.  It makes me so happy to see sub-9 minute pace on a long run, however I need to be reminded that always "running fast" doesn't make you fast.  Does that make sense?
So long, long story later I was stuck at the hospital until dark today and couldn't get in my slow 7 miles that I have planned.  Trail running in the dark = bad choice.  It's just Monday and I can get the workout in another day, but I'm feeling bummed.
Confession time: I think I'm going to have to commit to something that I REALLY do not like doing.....getting up early to run.
It's okay if you don't get this one.  Took me a minute. :)
No way Jose.  It's cold.  My face gets red.  Then I have to rush to get ready.  My face is still red.  Well here's my inner monologue telling me to get over it and get moving in the am!  Just because my schedule is trickier doesn't mean my fitness goals go away. I've just got to make sacrifices and work harder to make them happen.

To those of you who work 8-6 most days AND workout AND train AND if you have kids.  Shew, my hat is off to you.
I'm not thrilled about missing my run today or only getting in 3 workouts last week.  I know the power to change resides in me and I want my fitness mojo back.
I also need to get my RunDisney mojo back and share all the wonderful events of the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend with you guys.  It's coming. Trust me.

What do you do to keep your fitness motivation going?

Love and the snooze button,
Carissa & Kyle

  1. I was stuck in the "run fast, be fast" mentality forever and I really think my running suffered from it. Going into this next half with SLOW long run training so I am excited to see if there is a difference!

  2. Sometimes forgiving yourself is the best thing - you can't be superwoman all the time! With that being said, if you're ready to get back on fitness train (ok let's be real - itz not like you ever fell off!) then do it. And personally, I think you get used to the early morning workouts - I love em!

  3. You hit a hard goal and kicked butt! After I sub 2ed at Womens I was pooped...I had to sign up for more races to keep going. I like having a run coach to show m e which runs should be "A" races and which ill just run...as training runs...structure keeps me motivated ;) hope to see you for Princess!

  4. It really is so difficult to get up that early and bang out a workout - especially when it's a longer run that requires getting up even earlier. But you're human. We all are. We miss workouts and get grumpy about it later. That's my life on the daily ;) But this schedule won't last forever, right? Going for quality over quantity might be the name of the game. Have a great day!

  5. Mornings are a bear here and I hit snooze often! I used to get up and think OMG I HAVE to RUN and I would just dread dread dread it. But I have a mental trick I do now. This is totally going to sound nuts. But when I get up I ONLY focus on getting up and waking up. No pressure. I don't even think about my run. Once I have my cup of coffee and I'm all woke up I feel myself naturally start to get excited about going out and having an awesome run. No more dread!! It's a crazy mental trick but it works for me. :)
