Update: Knee Injury

Yesterday was a big milestone in my running recovery! I ran 3 miles!  <insert cheers and applause here>

It wasn't totally pain free. I felt some tightness in my knee around the 2.2 mile mark, but I really wanted to hit 3 miles so I finished.  I wore my Mueller IT band strap and I'm pretty sure that bad boy makes a world of difference.

Here are 3 reasons why yesterday's run was so awesome:

1. It was my longest run since March 10.  Over a MONTH ago.  Wow.
2. It means that I feel very confident that I can finish next week's Dirty Girl Mud Run in Atlanta and have a great time doing it.
3. I ran music free.  Our sweet kitten Minnie chewed my headphones so I was without tunes. Honestly, that's the longest I have ever run without headphones and I didn't die.  I did occasionally miss the distraction factor of a good old school Britney Spears jam!

I'm still not 100% sure what caused/is causing my knee pain.
All initial symptoms pointed to IT band syndrome.  I visited a sports massage therapist who noted severe tightness in my hips and psoas.

Then I visited the massage therapist at my chiropractor's office and she felt a massive MASSIVE knot in my right calf.  She attributed the calf knot to running different since I sprained my ankle in December and still ran a half 3 weeks later.  Oh yeah! Whoops~

So what came first? The chicken or the egg the knee, the ankle, or the hip?

I am still going to take it very easy on the knee, ice, stretch hips and IT band, and foam roll. I've also started using a tennis ball to break up knots in my calves and psoas.  I spend a lot of time looking like a crazy person on my living room floor! All in the name of recovery.

I would love to be out the door running more, but I know that's not smart.  I will probably do 2 easy miles next week and then tackle the 5k Mud Run.

Just in case you were wondering...after my run I enjoyed an orange and a rice cake with PB.

  1. I'm glad you were able to get a run in!! Knee injuries are one of my biggest fears, especially since lately I have been running more and working out harder. I recently started doing CrossFit and have really enjoyed using the foam rolls on my knees. It feels so good. And I also wanted to tell you that I saw a post on your blog about the dirty girl race a weeks back and decided to check it out. So I registered for one in my area and am doing my dirty girl race on May 5th. I'm so excited! Thanks for the inspiration & motivation!! Hope your knee continues to improve!

  2. Congrats! Funny little thing... When my mouse ran over your swollen ankle picture a thing popped up that said, "Click here to share!" Sorry for not sharing your swollen ankle - haha! :) :) Glad your knee is doing better!

  3. So glad that you were able to run! I would say that all of the injuries are probably related! I need to get my tennis balls out because my calves are tight too. I'm sure you will be fine for dirty girl! Have fun!

  4. It's good to hear that you've back into jogging and you're getting better than ever. Be sure to take time in letting your injuries heal fully though!
